About

The New Lines Institute for Strategy and Policy is a nonpartisan think tank in Washington D.C., working to enhance U.S. foreign policy based on a deep understanding of the geopolitics of the different regions of the world and their value systems.

In the recent past, we have witnessed extraordinary feats of human courage, dashed revolutionary hopes, genocide, war, and the largest refugee crisis since World War II. We believe that conventional wisdom and policy advice, based on abstraction, ideology, and superficial understanding of other regions, has not served our policymakers well.

As political, territorial, and philosophical “lines” shift, so must our approach to grappling with them and developing new lines of thinking.

The Institute was founded in 2019 by Dr. Ahmed Alwani, who serves as its president.

Vision

The New Lines Institute envisions a world that fulfills its potential and in which people and nations can thrive.

Our vision is inspired by a holistic view of the world, one that recognizes human interconnectedness and aims to achieve harmony and balance. We see a universal connection among people based on core principles regardless of race, color, religion, origin, ethnicity, or any other factor.

Mission and Purpose

Our mission is to provoke principled and transformative leadership based on peace and security, global communities, character, stewardship, and development.

Our purpose is to shape U.S. foreign policy based on a deep understanding of regional geopolitics and the value systems of those regions.

Principles

Our work is guided by five core principles:

Peace: the foundations on which we build prosperity and human fulfilment

Development: the process by which we reach our potential as human beings and societies

Community and Citizenship: a sense of belonging to something bigger than ourselves – be it global, national or local

Character: the expectation that all leaders should make brave decisions in good faith and in a principled way

Stewardship: a sense of responsibility and care toward all people and things that depend on us

Expertise

The New Lines Institute focuses on issues at the intersection of U.S. foreign policy and global geopolitics. We serve as a partner in navigating the world as it is and shaping the world as it should be. Our internal experts and external contributors provide context and direction that prioritizes human security and dignity. Unlike most think tanks, we have established an institutional method for research and analysis. Our innovative approach to policy assessments incorporates best practices from the fields of geopolitics, intelligence analysis, journalism, academia, and the private sector.

This model enables us to provide rigorous analyses and strategic forecasts from which we distill policy solutions for our nation’s decisionmakers. Our analytical methodology is reflected throughout all our publications. For more details, please refer to our submissions page.

Funding

Funding for The New Lines Institute is provided by the Fairfax Educational Foundation, a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit registered in the State of Georgia.

New Lines Institute accepts research grants and charitable donations from U.S. individuals and registered legal entities in support of its research priorities, and only insofar as such support is in compliance with U.S. laws and regulations; aligns with the institute’s vision, mission, purpose and principles; and falls within its core areas of expertise.

The Institute does not accept funding from any foreign government or entity and is one of the few think tanks in Washington with no foreign or local agendas.
