Fireside Chat: Comparing Community-based Approaches in Countering Violent Extremism

Please join the Newlines Institute at our D.C. office for a fireside chat with Dr. Houda Abadi and Dr. Peter Weinberger. She will discuss her policy brief Community Approaches to Preventing Violent Extremism: Morocco as a Case Stud y and Peter Weinberger will discuss his work on evaluating CVE projects in North Africa. Newlines Institute former director Dr. Qamar-ul Huda will moderate. The event will include lunch and refreshments; please RSVP quickly to guarantee a spot.

In her brief, Community Approaches to Preventing Violent Extremism: Morocco as a Case Study , Dr. Houda Abadi explains that existing PVE programming has failed because of its one-size-fits-all approach and overemphasis on ideology. We will be discussing gender-based approaches to PVE and CVE.

Dr. Houda Abadi is the founder and executive director of Transformative Peace, a consulting firm that specializes in inclusive peace processes; women, peace and security; human rights-based approaches in preventing violent extremism; and civic engagement. Prior to establishing Transformative Peace, Dr. Abadi served as the associate director of the Conflict Resolution Program at the Carter Center from 2014-2019. While working on the Syrian and the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, she designed and directed a locally tailored grassroots project that works with community and faith-based leaders from North Africa, Europe, and the United States to develop practical applications to prevent and address all forms of violent extremism.

Dr. Peter Weinberger is a specialist on trauma-informed approaches to violence prevention. He utilizes an interdisciplinary approach which combines practices from the fields of conflict resolution, neuroscience, and behavioral health. Internationally, he has designed and led countering violent extremism programs in the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, and the Western Balkans. In the United States, he has conducted research on far-right extremism and white supremacist movements, as well as co-led community trainings on how to apply public health models to address violent extremism. Dr. Weinberger is a Technical Advisor at Resonance, a consulting firm focusing on global development, where he serves as technical lead for US government funded programs meant to counter violent extremism in North Africa and the Sahel regions.
