The New Lines Institute (NLI) is a nonprofit think tank whose mission is to provoke principled and transformative leadership based on peace and security, global communities, character, stewardship, and development. Our purpose is to shape U.S. foreign policy based on a deep understanding of regional geopolitics and the value systems of those regions.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVE

You will create complex layout/design and informational graphics for the Analytical Development and Training Department (AnaDevT). You’ll serve as a graphics specialist, ensuring the timely completion and distribution of graphics and design projects while assisting in maintaining a high level of quality and creativity standards throughout the institute.

You’ll collaborate with the AnaDevT team as well as other departments to produce high-quality content to post on our website and social media accounts, as well as to disseminate to government and policy-making organizations. You also have a keen general interest in and knowledge of worldwide current affairs. You are comfortable working under limited supervision with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, as well as cooperative decision-making. You have the capability to multitask effectively, prioritize projects, and work under deadline pressures. You will assist in ensuring that NLI’s graphics and branding standards are maintained. You will help in maintaining and evolving best practices for the aforementioned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create informational graphics: Collaborate with colleagues and external authors to collect, write, and edit text and data. Discern the best way to display the information using charts, diagrams, maps, lists, and tables.
  • Page layout: Design various publication types (generally from 8 to 50+ pages). Conform to best practice design/layout principles and institutional guidelines. Select and prepare photos. Edit or write captions for photos. Work with endnotes and footnotes.
  • GIS mapping: Work with GIS technology to create content for publication.
  • Assorted other publication needs, which include but are not limited to editing flyers and posters for special events, creating PPT slides, and creating MS Word docs for internal or external use. Work on other institutional projects as needed.
  • Project management: Work closely with editorial graphic design manager (and all AnaDevT team members) to ensure continual development of projects.
  • Adhere to an established work schedule, with occasional need for evening or weekend coverage.
  • Follow NLI, Associated Press, and APA style rules.
  • Follow NLI’s mission, vision, and values and adhere to ethical and legal practices with regard to publishing, sourcing, and citations.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS (The application must specifically state how each of the following qualifications are met.)

  • Bachelor’s degree (from an accredited university) in graphic design, GIS, or related field (experience commensurate to education or essential duties may apply).
  • Minimum three years’ work experience in visual journalism, graphic design, GIS, or information visualization.
  • Experienced in or knowledgeable about current affairs and global geopolitics.

       PLUSES

  • Journalism/newsroom experience; think tank or other news/policy-making experience; other editorial work for public distribution.
  • Web and internet knowledge/skills (coding, UX/IX).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Art and design: Skill in designing, rendering, and drawing. Skilled in color theory, art and design principles, and typography.
  • Adobe Creative Cloud: Expert in Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
  • Microsoft Word/Excel: Experience in designing, formatting, and working with endnotes and footnotes in Word, as well as working with data and data sources in Excel.
  • GIS: Knowledgeable about GIS (ArcGIS), static maps, story mapping, and web-imbedded maps.
  • Publishing: Good understanding of publishing processes (web, print).
  • Writing: Understanding of how to write and edit for graphics/photo captions. Skilled in writing concepts, including word meaning, composition, and grammar. Adherence to AP style and APA citation style.
  • Communications: Ability to clearly communicate verbally or via video/chat conferencing.

ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

Normal office work environment (office or home). May involve rare travel.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience; benefits included (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), FSA)
