Dr. Santosh Mehrotra is a distinguished human development economist and a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Development Studies, University of Bath, having previously served as a Professor of Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. With a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, his career spans high-level policy roles in the Indian government – including as Director-General of the National Institute of Labour Economics Research – and over 15 years within the United Nations system as a chief economist for the UNDP and UNICEF. He is a leading expert on India’s labor markets, industrial policy, and “demographic dividend,” having authored numerous landmark reports and books such as “Reviving Jobs: An Agenda for Growth” and “India Out of Work: Unemployed Youth Become ‘Discouraged Workers’.” His work is instrumental in shaping policy discussions around vocational training, poverty reduction, and the structural transformation of developing economies.
