The New Lines Institute for Strategy and Policy is seeking a Senior Analyst to join its Political Systems team and lead modeling and analysis of the Indian political system. This person will play a key role in developing the new team’s strategy particularly with respect to research, information gathering, and model development.
The Political Systems team was established to create an internal capacity for long-term analysis of political systems by developing and maintaining detailed and accurate models of those systems. Various forms of this approach are common among international policy practitioners, but are used rarely within the academic and professional analytical communities due to common institutional incentives. The Political Systems team will seek to address this deficit and provide a type of analysis largely unavailable outside of certain professional communities. This analysis will be used to directly support policy decision-makers, other New Lines units, and develop products for the analytical community and broader public.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Analyst, India will report to the Senior Fellow, Political Systems, and will perform the following functions:
· Collect and document any information necessary or useful for better understanding the Indian political system.
· Identify and seek out new sources of information, particularly primary sources or those with direct knowledge of the Indian political system.
· Develop and maintain relationships with external partners able to provide or assist in collecting relevant information.
· Develop and maintain an analytical model of the Indian political system as well as develop options for new analytical products in collaboration with the Senior Fellow and other team members.
· Document and update this model in the relevant software tools in use by the Institute.
· Draft written deliverables as directed by the Senior Fellow using this model.
· Provide relevant support to other units and staff, including through the development and delivery of relevant trainings.
· Supervise and oversee other Political Systems team members assigned to work on the Indian political system.
· Consult with and advise the Senior Fellow on the development of team strategy and opportunities to improve our models, deliverables, and impact.
· Work closely with Political Systems team members to constantly identify and act on opportunities to improve our models, deliverables, and impact.
· Participate in relevant internal New Lines staff meetings.
· Participate in meetings with external partners as directed by the Senior Fellow.
· Proficiency in written and spoken Hindi. Proficiency in written and spoken Bengali, Punjabi, and/or other languages in common use in India is desirable.
· Graduate degree in India studies, international relations, political science, security studies, intelligence, journalism or related fields; in exceptional cases, this requirement may be waived for candidates with extensive relevant work experience
· At least three (3) years of relevant work experience
· Extensive knowledge of the Indian political system and key Indian political actors
· Enthusiasm for learning new approaches to political analysis and research
· Creativity and enthusiasm for investigation and seeking out new sources of information.
· Exceptional organizational and writing skills, including editing and verbal communications.
· Exceptional interpersonal skills, including an ability to work well in a collaborative team setting and to effectively gather information during meetings
· Ability to work independently
· Extensive research experience
· A commitment to accuracy in reporting and analysis
· Attention to detail
· Experience with open-source intelligence (OSINT) collection is desirable.
· A portfolio of written work on the Indian political system is desirable.
· Previous supervisory experience is desirable.
