Session on Localizing the Youth, Peace and Security Movement in America

In December 2015, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS). This is the first resolution by the Security Council which recognizes young women and men as important partners in the maintenance and promotion of international peace and security.

In the American context, mass shootings have become the subject of discussion in cities, especially in local schools and places of worship. Crucial to this discussion is also the Principles and Barriers of Meaningful Youth Engagement. While there is no designated entity for youth representation at the national policy level, American youth have managed to build movements, take the streets, and utilize online and offline spaces to let their voices be heard by local, national, and even world leaders. This side event seeks to explore different entry points to localizing the youth, peace and security agenda in America. Sustaining the movement requires meaningful youth engagement and a holistic, collective approach, inclusive of public and private institutions, civil society and young people.

This event is co-sponsored by the Newlines Institute, UN Major Group for Children and Youth, UN Habitat, United Nations Association of the USA, and International Center for Religion and Diplomacy.

The event will be live-streamed on the UN Major Group for Children and Youth’s Facebook page.
